Terms of Service
Last updated: 28 September 2026
Welcome to Lumi, made by Lumi Studios. By using the app, you agree to these terms. Please read them carefully.
1. About Lumi
Lumi is a mental wellness app that helps you reflect on your thoughts, practise cognitive reframing and build kind habits. Lumi is not a medical device, a replacement for therapy, or a crisis service.
2. Not Medical Advice
About AI content: Lumi's edits of your thoughts, chat replies, reframes and weekly reflections are written by AI models from Anthropic (Claude), with Google (Gemini) as a backup. They are not medical, therapeutic or professional advice. They are for personal reflection only, and they can be inaccurate, irrelevant or not right for your situation. Don't rely on them in place of qualified professional help. How our AI providers handle your requests is explained in our Privacy Policy.
Important: Lumi does not provide medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. If you are in crisis, contact your local emergency services or use the crisis lines on the app's Help screen.
HIPAA non-applicability: Lumi is not a covered entity or business associate under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Using Lumi does not create a patient-provider relationship, and what you enter in the app is not protected health information (PHI) under HIPAA. If you need HIPAA-covered services, please see a licensed healthcare provider.
3. Your Account and Eligibility
- Minimum age: You must be at least 13 years old to use Lumi. The app asks your age during onboarding, and people under 13 can't continue. By using the app, you confirm that you meet this requirement. If you are under 18, you confirm that your parent or legal guardian has reviewed and agreed to these terms on your behalf. We may end access where we have reason to believe a user is under 13.
- You can use Lumi without an account for journaling, check-ins, tools and exercises.
- An account (Sign in with Apple or Google) is needed for AI features that run on our servers.
- You are responsible for keeping your account secure.
4. Help in a Hard Moment Is Always Free
The Help screen and its crisis lines, breathing, grounding, TIPP, worry on ice, check-ins and your journal are part of the free version of Lumi. They are never behind Lumi Pro or a daily limit. If something you write reads like a crisis, the app shows you people who can help, not an upgrade screen.
5. Subscriptions and Payments
- Free and Pro: Lumi has a free version and a paid upgrade, Lumi Pro. The app shows what each includes before you buy.
- Billing: Purchases are made through the Apple App Store or Google Play and billed to your store account. The price is shown in your currency before you buy.
- Free trials: If a free trial is offered, you are not charged during the trial. Unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends, it becomes a paid subscription at the price shown when you started it. If you buy a subscription during a free trial, any unused part of the trial ends.
- Trial reminder: When you start a free trial, the app schedules a reminder on your phone before the trial ends, usually two days before. The reminder is a courtesy. If notifications are off or the reminder doesn't arrive, the trial still becomes a paid subscription unless you cancel.
- Auto-renewal: Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each period (week, month or year) unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends. Your store account is charged for the next period within the 24 hours before the current one ends.
- Cancelling: You can manage or cancel a subscription in your device's subscription settings. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription. After you cancel, Pro stays on until the end of the period you have paid for.
- Lifetime: Where offered, Lumi Pro Lifetime is a one-time purchase that does not renew. It unlocks Lumi Pro on your store account for as long as we offer Lumi Pro in the app.
- Family Sharing: If a purchase is marked as shareable in the store, members of your family group can use it under the store's Family Sharing rules.
- Fair use: Lumi Pro has no daily count you are meant to notice, but to keep the service fair and running there is a fair-use limit of up to 15 of Lumi's edits and reframes, and 50 messages to Lumi, each day.
- Price changes: If a subscription price changes, the store tells you before it applies and, where the store or the law requires, asks you to agree.
- Refunds: Refunds are handled by Apple or Google under their refund policies. Nothing in these terms affects your statutory rights.
6. Acceptable Use
You agree not to:
- Use Lumi to create harmful, abusive or illegal content
- Try to manipulate, jailbreak or exploit the AI features
- Reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble the app
- Use the app in any way that breaks the law
- Share your account with others
7. AI Features
- AI content (Lumi's edits of your own thoughts, chat replies, reframes and weekly reflections) is written by AI models from Anthropic (Claude), with Google (Gemini) as a backup. It can be inaccurate, irrelevant or unhelpful, and it is not medical, therapeutic or professional advice.
- Before anything is sent, the app checks your words on your phone. If they read like a crisis, or like someone is hurting you, nothing is sent to an AI provider and the app shows you people who can help. Lumi may also choose not to edit some thoughts, such as thoughts about losing someone, and stay with you instead.
- Daily limits: The free version includes one of Lumi's edits or reframes of your own thoughts and 3 messages to Lumi each day, and your first weekly reflection. Lumi's edits of the example thoughts and Today's thought happen on your phone and are always free. Lumi Pro raises the limits to the fair-use limit in section 5.
- Your requests go to our AI providers through our servers and are not stored on Lumi's servers. How long our providers keep them, and the fact that they don't use them to train their models, is explained in our Privacy Policy.
- We may change AI features, limits or the AI models we use. If we change which companies process your requests, we will update the Privacy Policy first.
8. Your Data
- Your journal entries and wellness data are stored on your device. You own them.
- You can share any entry as text at any time. With Lumi Pro you can also export your journal as a PDF, a CSV spreadsheet or a JSON backup.
- See our Privacy Policy for full details on how data is handled.
9. Intellectual Property
The app, including its design, code, the Lumi character and its content, is protected by copyright and other intellectual property laws. You may not copy, modify or distribute any part of the app without our written permission.
10. Disclaimer of Warranties
Lumi is provided "as is", without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We do not guarantee that the app will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that AI content will be accurate or right for your situation.
11. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Lumi and its creators are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages arising from your use of the app, including reliance on AI content. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, such as liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
12. Changes to These Terms
We may update these terms from time to time. We will tell you about significant changes in the app before they take effect. Continuing to use the app after that means you accept the updated terms.
13. Termination
We may suspend or end your access to AI features if you break these terms. Your local data stays yours whatever the status of your account.
14. Governing Law
These terms are governed by the laws of your country of residence. Nothing in these terms limits the consumer protection rights you have under the laws where you live. We will make reasonable efforts to resolve any dispute informally before formal proceedings.
